- For the budget conscious
- Better for a shorter roadie (2 weeks max)
- Equipped with all the basics
- NOTE – you won’t be able to stand up in this option
This option is the RV style of campervan and is perfect if you like things a little more luxurious and there is a big group of you! Travelling with the famo or the crew? A motorhome is perfect for you…
- Mainly for families or bigger groups
- Good for a long-term roadie
- Fully equipped with everything you need to cook

How does the rental ACTUALLY work?
If you’ve done some research already you’ll see it is a little overwhelming with all of the campervan rental sites with so many additional costs. We’ve broken it down below to keep you in the LOOP of how the rental actually works
Daily Rental – The campers are priced based on a daily rental price which we can apply our discount to…
Insurance – we ALWAYS recommend insurance for your roadie, better to be safe than sorry! If you don’t take the insurance option expect to put down a bond of $3000
One Way Fees – in the case of some routes you’ll be travelling one way as opposed to a loop, sometimes we can help to waive these fees.
Premium Location Fees – to avoid these, chat to us and we’ll help you choose your locations to save you even more money
Admin Fee – most campervan companies have an admin fee with any booking
Extra Add ons – if you wish to add on table and chairs, GPS or additional insurance cover
Other expenses to consider
Once you’ve got your camper ready to hit the road, there are a few other expenses to consider…
Petrol – You’ll have to top up the petrol as you go. Most companies will expect you to return the camper with a full tank. To give you an idea of how much you’ll have to spend – on her Great Ocean Road roadie, RatPacker Mollie spent $140 on petrol over 5 days.
Food and drink – You’re going to have to keep that fridge topped up. Try and do a big food shop every week or so.
Additional eating out food – Dinner with a view, with the camper doors flung open and the ocean breeze blowing through your hair will never get old buuuut, you may fancy a bit of luxury some nights and head out for dinner.
This next tip is going to be a life saver!
There’s this super sick app called WikiCamps. You can use it to find a load of free campsites to park up for the night. You’re very welcome…
What to pack for your roadie...
- Decent walking shoes/trainers – there are so many epic national park walks and you’re not gonna want to hike them in flip flops!
- Swimwear – for those lush beach showers.
- Make yourself a decent playlist – there will be a lot of hours on the road to fill with sick tunnnnnes.
- Charging cables
- A book
- Pack of cards
- Loo roll
- Shampoo and shower gel
- Flannel – or something to scrub with!
- Sun cream
- Water bottles – keep em topped up.
- Insect repellent
- Lots of snacks
First time heading out on a roadie? We bet you’ve got a million and one questions for us, and don’t worry, we had the same questions when we first started travelling via camper!
The RatPack crew have answered some of your FAQ’s below, if you have any other questions we are ALWAYS here to help so shoot us a WhatsApp or hit up the live chat….
How do I go to the bathroom?
There will be public loos along the way or you’ll have to embrace the bush wee.
Where do I shower?
Luckily, Aussie is pretty warm most of the time, so all you’ll need is a bowl of soap, water and a flannel to give yourself a scrub down.
A load of the beaches also have showers. A shower with a sea view – sounds pretty good to me!
How much food should I get?
Stock up on food every week or so when you come across a supermarket.
Avoid grabbing things in petrol stations – they’re expensive and you’ll end up spending wayyyy more money than you should.
Is is easy to drive in Australia?
Yep, it’s SUPER easy!
Unless you’re going through a city, you’re going to be on the open road for the majority of the journey. The open roads are straight, empty and normally pretty beautiful.
They do drive on the left over there, but don’t worry about it – you’ll get used to it! Plus, there arn’t many roundabouts in Oz.
How will I wash my clothes?
Some of the campsites may have facilities to wash your clothes.Or, you may have to stop off at a hostel every now and then for the night to use the washing facilities.
How will I know the way?
Grab yourself a local phone so you can use 3G for maps if you’re worried about getting lost. Most campers also provide you with a map – old school style!
